Human beings have always been thinking with our hands as well as our brains, and in constant conversation with everything that surrounds us. We extend ourselves into our environment through what we make, and the environment makes its way into us through our interaction with it. Because the body and the environment are part of the mind, you can start by moving material around in space, and pattern and meaning will inevitably arise. In this body of work, questions concerning rigid structure versus softness and imperfection come into play. Connections emerge between ink and thread, text and textile - two different ways of organizing and encoding information in physical material. Possibilities unfold into an ever-expanding field of connections through iteration over time.
About the artist: Leah Smith thinks about deep time, embodied thought, and our place in the natural world through an artistic practice encompassing drawing, sculpture, and fiber arts. After growing up in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains near Denver, Colorado, she fell in love with exploring the green, worn-down hills of Appalachia during her college years, and now lives and works in the small town of Canton, North Carolina. She earned her BA in Studio Art from Davidson College in 2013, where she was the recipient of the McAllen Scholarship for Studio Art. Her work has been exhibited nationally, and she has held residencies at the Hambidge Center (GA) and I-Park (CT).
